Is there a role for proper nutrition in immune function?

It makes sense that this complex system within our bodies, that rises to fight disease, should be nurtured and kept at a high degree of function. The famous early physician Hippocrates, around the year 450 B.C., recognized the value of nutrition and coined the phrase “Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” Nutrition, stress reduction, exercise -- recent studies suggest that these natural, non-traditional activities may strengthen the immune system. It is obvious that an antibiotic given to a person with normal nutrition will have a greater effect than in a nutritionally-deficient individual. This fact is also true for healing a wound, building up the immune white cell counts, and even fighting cancer.
